Squats, Squats, Squats
We always hear that we should do squats and they are in just about every workout video out there but why and how the heck do you do a squat correctly? Squats are a great movement because they utilize large muscle groups which help burn a lot of calories. They are also a multi-joint movement because you are bending at the hips and knees and also there is movement at your ankles. It is important that when you are doing squats you are using correct form becase incorrect form can cause a lot of issuses down the road when done repetitively such as back issues and knee issues, and also correct form will help you get the most out of the exercise. So here are some tips for correct form:
-start with your feet about shoulder width apart if not a little bit further (depends on what type of squat you are doing check back next week for a workout with all different squats)
-always bend and the waist and send your hips backwards
-keep your chest up
-bend at the knees but don't let your knees go past your toes
-always look up and if you can look in a mirror to see your form
-your thighs should be parallel to the ground when you are at the bottom of the squat
-you can go further than parallel but you should go to at least parallel to get the most out of the squat
Hopefully those little tips stick in your mind the next time you are doing squat.
These tips will come in handy next week with a leg workout that will get posted.
Practice good form!
